Bruno the beetle was a wanderer. He had traveled farther than any beetle in his colony, crossing fields, forests, and even a stream by riding on a floating leaf. But now he was lost.

The sun was hidden behind clouds. The moss on the trees grew on every side. He had no idea which way led home.

Then he found the compass.

It was lying in a bed of clover, its glass cracked, its needle spinning. Bruno crawled onto its face, and the needle stopped, pointing east.

"Follow me," a voice whispered.

Bruno looked around. No one was there. But the needle seemed to glow faintly, pulsing like a heartbeat.

He walked east, the needle guiding him. The forest thinned, then gave way to a field-his field. The colony was just ahead.

"Thank you," Bruno said.

"You're welcome," the compass replied.

Bruno visited the compass every day, bringing tiny offerings of dew and pollen. In return, the compass helped him find lost things-a ladybug's home, a caterpillar's favorite leaf, a firefly's glowing grove.

The other beetles called him a hero. But Bruno knew the truth. He was just a wanderer with a magical friend.

One autumn day, the compass stopped working. Its needle was still, its glass darker than ever.

"You're leaving," Bruno said.

"My time is done," the compass whispered. "But I'll always be with you. Just look at the stars."

That night, Bruno looked up at the sky. The stars formed a pattern-the same pattern as the compass needle, pointing east.

He never got lost again. And he never stopped believing that even broken things can hold magic, if you're willing to listen.

The compass is still there, buried in the clover, waiting for the next lost wanderer to find it.

And Bruno visits it every spring, leaving dew and pollen, whispering stories of his adventures, keeping the memory alive.
